Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door.

A poem to Celebrate 50 years of Beneavin by John McDonnell, Co-ordinator of the Finglas NO NAME club.

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Something tells me I’ve been here before

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Left 40 years ago yet still coming back for more!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Was it Mr. Redmond or Cathal Moore?

Who taught us so many lessons to endure?

And prepared us expertly for life’s long adventure!

Maths was Mr. Finnegan’s expertise

While Mr. Cassidy taught us French with ease

Mr. O’Shea was the Business man

Whilst others  taught us a homework plan!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Take that pencil off the floor

Mechanical Drawing will never be the same

Draw your own conclusions it’s just a game!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Studying for exams was quite a chore

Leaving Certificate aside

Nothing could have prepared us for life’s great divide!

School was not always a bunch of roses

Life itself is not all it sometimes supposes

Getting the balance right is difficult to achieve

Teachers are there to help us believe!

Studying for exams was such a pain

Loss of sleep as we feel the strain

Now our wildest dreams we recall

Sometimes we have nightmares as we fear another fall!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Come to think of it student life was such a bore

Until sport entered into the mix

Life was so hard to get a fix.

Hurling and football were a Godsend

Especially when teachers had us at wits end!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

Recalling memories as you recreate that vital score

Reliving action as you describe that great save

Teachers anxious that we should better behave!

Yes, anything to give us some distraction

A fine elocution teacher brought some reaction

This,  That, These  and Those

Focused our attention, helping to keep us on our toes!

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Beneavin’s Door

After 40 years should I still come back for more?

Am I still under some spell?

Next time I think I’ll try the bell!
